The second practice session at Western Springs Speedway last Saturday showed the many speedway fans who attended a promising glimpse of things to come on November 4 at opening night and for the rest of the upcoming season of racing in Auckland.
Eighteen Sprint cars turned up for a shakedown run on the famous Auckland track where later this summer the New Zealand Championship will be run in February. Drivers from as far away as Christchurch worked on car set up and getting to grips with the Spring’s red clay surface. Auckland drivers and their Hamilton counterparts were impressed with the condition of the practice track.
“That was an amazing track, running a cushion like that so early in the season was a treat, enthused Springs regular Tommy Rusher, if we can get a track like that for the New Zealand title later this season the racing will be incredible come feature time. There were racing lines developing all over the track.”
A tight group of Auckland V8 Sprint car stars including legends Allan Wakeling, Kerry Jones and super fast youngster Jamie MacDonald will ensure that fans will be treated to some intense racing on the tight Western Springs track.
“If you want to learn how to race a Sprint car properly in New Zealand then Western Springs is the place you need to be, said multiple NZ Champion Wakeling, it’s not an easy track to drive, all the fast guys are here and you’ve got to stand on the gas to keep up let alone win a feature.”
The practice pace proved too hot for some of the drivers out for their first time on the dirt oval this season. Kerry Brocas jumped the cushion and rolled his car as he started getting on the gas late in the afternoon session.
Jamie MacDonald received an invitation from Parramatta Speedway to race in the Sydney track’s feature race on Saturday and was unable to be at the Spring’s practice session. MacDonald has spent time in the USA this summer and along with Kerry Jones he is spending some time racing the early season at the famous Australian Sprint car oval.
