The number 2 seems to have special significance for US drivers who race at Western Springs Speedway. There have been more than a few visitors from the USA over the years that have had an affinity for the number.
The 1969 USAC champion Bob Tatersall won the inaugural 30 lap World Derby at the Springs in 1967 driving USA no.2. The man that many fans regard as the finest driver ever seen at Western Springs won the 30 lap Derby again in 1969 making him the first 2 time winner of the race.
In the early ‘70s USAC champion Larry Rice put in more than a few laps at the Springs in the USA number 2 VW powered midget.
Two times US National Sprint champion Rich Vogler drove the Pipeline Industries sponsored no. 2 midget to victory in the International Midget Car Series in 1981. Vogler also took the number 2 spot in the World 30 lap feature in the same car.
The only woman to ever win a feature race at Western Springs was American Denise Bennett driving, you guessed it, no.2.
In more recent years team mates Cory Kruseman (2 time Chilibowl winner) and Tracy Hines both drove no.2 cars in the same races during the 2004 International Midget series at Western Springs.
Kruseman returned the following season to drive another USA no.2 for his second time at the famous Auckland track.
It looks as if there may be at least one more 2 car competing for World Midget series honours in January 2007.
