Western Springs Midget Ace Brad Mosen has secured a drive with one of the USA’s premier speedway racing teams for the up-coming summer racing season.
The 18 year old Aucklander flies to Chicago tomorrow and will drive to meet his new team at their headquarters in Columbus, Indiana. Keith Kunz Motor Sport will put Mosen in the driver’s seat of a factory Bullet race car for 10 rounds of the prestigious USAC Midget Series.
The USAC National series is the premier speedway series in the . The 50 year old series attracts the best of the best midget drivers from all over the USA and includes two day meetings at the legendary Knoxville Raceway and the Belleville High Banks.
“It will be unreal to drive at these tracks and having to run the Knoxville Midget Nationals in my second US outing will be a challenge, said an excited Mosen. For me it will be about proving myself to the team and finishing races.”
“It is hard to believe I’ll be in the states next week and driving at Kokomo four days after leaving NZ. Driving a race car in the has always been a dream for me and to have the chance to drive for such a well respected team alongside such great racers is an amazing opportunity”.
Mosen teams up with stars Jay Drake and Bryan Clauson in one of three factory Bullet chassis cars powered by Fontana engines. The Keith Kunz designed cars are the latest incarnation of the built midget that Mosen has driven at Western Springs Speedway here in for the last two seasons.
Driving a Kunz chassis is not the only connection Mosen has had with the team prior to his sign-up. California native and former Keith Kunz team driver, World Sprint Car champion, Cory Kruseman, knows the young driver well.
“Brad’s got real driving talent and ability and his no nonsense approach to racing will take him a long way in the . Said Kruseman. He’ll make a mark in the for sure, he’s got the right attitude and he sure knows how to stand on the gas”.
Mosen has had a standout season here in New Zealand smashing the Western Springs Speedway lap record on his way to winning more feature races than any other driver at the well know home of Midget racing in Auckland.
Western Springs promoter and veteran speedway aficionado Bill Buckley is not surprised that this opportunity has come up for the fast youngster.
“It has been great to see Brad’s driving develop over the last 4 or 5 years. He has a lot of support here in New Zealand and has worked through the ranks in three different classes to become what many fans now consider to be their favourite driver said Buckley, He has a humble approach to driving and winning, he’s a talented driver and he’s a great kid”.
Brad will return to New Zealand in October to compete in the Western Springs Speedway National Championship Series and the World Midget Series at the Springs later in January.
