MOSEN WINS THE BATTLE BUT CURRIE'S WINNING THE WAR
26 Dec 2005

Young midget driver Brad Mosen once again dominated the feature race with a superb drive through to the win at Western Springs in the fourth round of the Springs National Championship Series. A second place finish for Steven Currie pushes him to top spot on the points table 5 points ahead of Mosen.

Mosen started from fourth on the grid and quickly passed front row starter Michael Kendall to put pressure on Lance Beale who succumbed to the youngsters attack on lap 12. Mosen never looked threatened for the remainder of the race and took the chequered flag ahead of Carl Worboys.

Officials relegated Worboys to third place after a pole line infringement during a tough battle with Steven Currie for 2nd place.

“I’m not happy at all”, said the disgruntled Worboys, “that’s racing and we’re all fighting for position out there. To relegate me for something other drivers are also doing during a tough race seems unbelievable.”

Mosen fought hard to get by Beale but was surprised no other drivers challenged for the lead.

“I waited for someone to come up beside me during the last half of the race and was surprised to see no one arrive to challenge for the lead” said the modest Mosen.

Veteran midget racer Graham Standring fought his way into forth place ahead of Lance Beale and Shaun Insley who had started 10th on the grid.

In only his second race at the Springs this season, Australian Super Series co-leader, Michael Pickens did himself no favours by spinning out early in the race trying to pass a determined Beale. Pickens had posted the fastest lap of the race as he charged through the field towards the front but was philosophical about another DNF on his home track.

“I tried to get underneath Lance and then had nowhere else to go,” said Pickens “The front end was damaged as the other car hit me so it was impossible to re-start.”

TeAwamutu driver Tony Fabish fought hard all night after a DNF in his second heat. Fabish had to drive through and win the Semi Main to start 13th off the feature grid. His 8th place finish behind of Scott Buckley means that Fabish now sits on 4th place on the National Series points table.

Nevil Basalaj finished in 10th place just ahead of a struggling Michael Kendall who was followed over the line by Dave Harding, visiting driver Michael Brunt and Tim Malone.

A disappointed Bryce Townsend had another nightmare night of racing when magneto problems sidelined his car. A last minute effort to get into Don Kay’s car failed without proper set-up time Townsend was unable to come to terms with the car.

“I’ll get it right soon” said Townsend “The car has been running well and once we have this problem sorted we’ll be back out front.”

The next race meeting will be the last chance for all drivers to impress the selectors and get points on the board before the NZ team is announced for the International World Midget  Series which starts on January 19th then the 50 lapper on 21st at Western Springs Speedway before heading south to Powerbuilt Speedway in Christchurch.
