After a sensational 2009 International Midget World Series at Western Springs Speedway, and a hard fought first NZ Midget Championship win at Nelson two weeks ago, Auckland’s Shayne Alach goes into this weekend NZ Midget Grand Prix (March 7) at The Springs as one of the favourites. Certainly Alach won’t have it all his own way, with at least seven other Auckland based Midget racers in with a genuine chance of winning the Grand Prix. Two-time NZ Champ and defending Grand Prix Champion Michael Pickens has won ten features this season including the North Island title at Huntly Speedway. Luck didn’t go his way in Nelson for the NZ’s, and will want to add another Grand Prix victory to his ever growing list of Midget victories. Brad Mosen finished a close second to Alach at the NZ Championships, and recently won both the International Midget World Series, and the 50 Lap Midget World Championship at Western Springs Speedway. Other’s expected to feature on Saturday night will be former NZ Champs Shaun Insley, Carl Worboys, and Michael Kendall, new 3NZ Angus McLeod, and regular NZ Midget test team members Lance Beale, Scott Buckley, and Graham Standring. It’s also a Speedway Championship double header at Western Springs on Saturday night for the final meeting of the summer, with nearly forty, Three Quarter Midgets from all over NZ contesting the 2009 NZ TQ Championships as well. This title is wide open this season with at least a dozen drivers in with a genuine chance of winning the prestigious NZ Championships.
