Western Springs Drivers Dominate NZ Titles
24 Feb 2009

Western Springs Speedway’s domination of the New Zealand Speedway Open Wheel titles has continued with Shayne Alach and Dean Brindle winning the New Zealand Midget and Sprintcar Championships respectively this past weekend.

Shayne Alach won his first New Zealand Midget Championship in Nelson on Saturday night, holding off fellow Aucklanders Brad Mosen and Angus McLeod for a popular victory. Alach’s father Ray has also been a previous winner of the prestigious NZ Midget title. The Alach’s join the Morris’s (Trevor and Snow), as the only father and son combination’s who have ever won NZ Midget Championship.

Dean Brindle won his first New Zealand Sprintcar Championship at Palmerston North Speedway on Sunday night, ahead of American Ricky Logan, and Greg Pickerill. Brindle and Pickerill are both based in the Waikato, but are registered to Western Springs Speedway.

Brindle’s win was especially notable for the fact that he hadn’t raced for a month, after destroying an engine at Western Springs earlier in the season. The new powerplant only arrived back in the country from the US on the Monday before the title, with its first scheduled race in qualifying on Saturday night in Palmerston North.

With the New Zealand Three Quarter Midget Championship being held at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway this coming Saturday night (Feb. 28), there is a real chance of yet another Springs registered driver winning the third of the Speedway open wheel titles this season.

Over the last twenty years, drivers from the iconic Auckland Speedway have dominated the three different titles. Twelve out of the last twenty NZ TQ Championships have been won by Auckland based drivers, with nineteen out of the last twenty NZ Midget Champions coming from The Springs. Like the Midget’s, nineteen out of the last twenty NZ Sprintcar titlists have been based at Western Springs. That’s an amazing overall win ratio of 83% over the last twenty years of NZ TQ, Midget, and Sprintcar Championships around the country.
